The couple, Costa Rican natives who were previously assigned to a Salvation Army group in Minnesota for six years, said they arrived at the same time many people from Central and South America also arrived in Elgin to start new lives. Their calling to devote themselves to the nonprofit group grew with their son’s death, she said. Fernando urged her to be strong and keep doing her best.
