Elemental has been a failure for Pixar, whereas Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been a huge success for Sony, proving Pixar's sad state.
Pixar used to be the peak of Western animation studios, but the fates of Elemental and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have revealed the sad truth about Pixar movies in 2023. These films were two of the most anticipated movies of 2023, with families and animation fans alike eagerly awaiting the release of both projects in June 2023. However, there is a massive disparity between the two, with one being a critical and commercial success, and the other being a critical and commercial failure.
Other movie studios quickly began cropping up computer animation departments, making movies that attempted to mimic the animation style that defined Pixar in its early years. DreamWorks released Shrek in 2001 before completely making the switch from traditional to computer animation, while Blue Sky found success with Ice Age in 2002. Even Walt Disney Animation Studios tried and failed to mimic Pixar with Chicken Little in 2005 before Disney outright bought Pixar in 2006.
This all leads to Elemental, which has cemented that Pixar is no longer the king of animation. Elemental's opening weekend is the worst in Pixar's history, and its critical reception isn't much better than its terrible commercial performance. Pixar has seemingly lost its touch, not knowing what movies to send to theaters and what movies to send to streaming. Elemental is a far cry from Pixar's early classics, showing that something has been lost.
