Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer said he will bring up for a vote a ban on bump stocks after the Supreme Court last week struck down a federal rule banning the devices, which enable semiautomatic rifles to fire hundreds of bullets a minute. In the 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court said bump stocks do not qualify as machine guns under a 1986 law that barred civilians from owning new versions of the weapons.
In 2018, the Trump administration interpreted the law to ban bump stocks, after a gunman used the devices to open fire on a Las Vegas music festival, ultimately killing 60 people in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The election-year vote could be awkward for some Republicans, who expressed support for the Trump administration action but have expressed reluctance to support legislation.
