The two winners will take over spots vacated by Aisha Wahab and Sara Lamnin.
HAYWARD — The eight candidates running for two Hayward City Council spots in the Nov. 8 election all agree that public safety is the key concern in a city that’s seen nine homicides in the first 10 months of 2022 and regular thefts of catalytic converters.Affordable housing and homelessness; education concerns and growing the city’s population also were among the issues that members of the field said are key.
Issa said she had a special interest in public-safety issues: On the day she submitted her paperwork to put her name on the ballot, she had a reminder of the challenges residents face. The two candidates elected will take over spots vacated by Aisha Wahab and Sara Lamnin. Wahab is running for the state Senate and Lamnin is moving to the separately elected Hayward Area Recreation and Park District.
Growing the city through new businesses and residents was a priority for multiple candidates. Goldstein said for that to happen, the city must counter a perception that it is crime-ridden and unsafe. He said he advocates for more interaction between police and neighborhood watch groups, which he said could help police narrow the times and locations of crimes.
