Voting results for Los Angeles mayor show Congresswoman Karen Bass and billionaire developer Caruso still neck-and-neck, with many ballots still uncounted.
In the race for Los Angeles mayor, developer Rick Caruso had 40.53% and Congresswoman Karen Bass had 38.76%, according returns reported just before 4 p.m. Friday, June 10 by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder. City Councilman Kevin de Leon was a very distant third with 7.61%.
Outstanding ballots not tallied on Election Day are usually not enough in number to swing any but the most narrow races. But outstanding ballots represent about one-third of total votes countywide, and officials don’t know which areas in L.A. County have the most numbers of outstanding ballots. Whether Bass or Caruso is chosen, the mayor who replaces termed-out Mayor Eric Garcetti will grapple with a homelessness crisis, a series of corruption scandals and the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
