Eisenhower High School in Blue Island took time during its 2022 graduation ceremony to honor a fallen hero, posthumously awarding Chicago firefighter Mashawn Plummer its annual Distinguished Alumni Award.
Felicia Townsend-Plummer, Jermaine Plummer and Flora Leavy leave the stage after accepting the Distinguished Alumni Award for Mashawn Plummer from Assistant Principal Timothy Baker. Mashawn Plummer, a Chicago firefighter, was killed battling a fire in December 2021.
Plummer attended Quincy University where he majored in prelaw but took the exam to become a firefighter during his junior year, though he was not called to attend training for nearly seven years.“He knew he wanted to be in service and to help the community,” said Townsend-Plummer. “He felt that this was what he was supposed to do. When he went on his first ride-along after the academy he sent me a selfie smiling saying this was his destiny.
“He was such a good kid,” said Jamie Konzelman, Plummer’s former guidance counselor. “He was always smiling and talking about his goals. There aren’t enough nice words to say about him. I saw him in 2020 when he came in to pick up his transcripts for the academy and he was just beaming. He was so proud, and I was so proud of him. We were supposed to be social distancing and I still was so happy for him I gave him a hug. He was unforgettable.
“We’re in this gymnasium that’s filled with anticipation and filled with hope, and we’re kind of teetering on this edge of what was and what will be,” said High School District 218 Superintendent Ty Harting, an Eisenhower alumnus who is retiring in June.Harting and Valedictorian Edgar Suarez both focused a portion of their remarks on the challenges the class of 2022 faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
