From the Editorial Board: While voter fraud is exceedingly rare in the U.S., Trump and his acolytes have ballooned it into a much larger, and largely fictional, problem, and done so in a cynical, dangerous way.

That 16% is too many, though Illinoisans can feel good that only two of those Big Lie believers won. Here’s the bottom line: The Republican Party remains caught in an existential crisis and one of its most glaring liabilities is the faction within that twists the notion of “election integrity” into a tool to disenfranchise non-Republican voters, particularly voters of color.
Then there’s the Office of Election Crimes and Security that Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis created in 2021 to go after election fraud. The new office was handed a $1.1 million budget, a waste of taxpayer money given that its functions were already being handled by the Florida attorney general, the secretary of state and Florida’s Department of Law Enforcement.
