Editorial: McTorry in the Democratic primary for 208th Criminal District Court

Earlier this year, we recommended Democratic voters oust Judge Greg Glass of the 208th District Court in Harris County due to a record of bungled bond decisions, and to choose another candidate to compete for the seat in the fall. And boy did they ever. Glass placed third in the three-way primary, finishing with just 16 percent of the vote. For an incumbent in his own party’s primary? That’s a shellacking.

And yet, neither of the other two candidates passed the threshold needed to avoid a runoff. That’s why Democrats must now choose between Kim McTorry and Beverly Armstrong in a May 24 runoff. Early voting begins Monday. We continue to believe that McTorry, 37, is the better choice for Democrats, and recommend her. She impressed us with a balanced approach she said she’ll bring to her role as judge — a commitment that isn’t surprising, given her experience as a prosecutor and defense attorney.

“I believe in restorative justice,” she told us ahead of the March 1 primary. “I believe in criminal justice reform, but I also believe that a judge should be equally as compassionate about the victims of crimes as they are about those who are accused of crimes.”From the Editorial BoardArmstrong, 54, has served as a prosecutor for 15 years in both Polk County and Galveston County, but lacks criminal law experience in Harris County.
