Superintendent Henry Yzaguirre recommended closing four schools because of a $10 million...

Parents of kids who attend schools at South San Antonio ISD react as board members discuss closing four schools.Board members voted to keep the schools open — the wrong decision for a sinking district. In rejecting a push to close four campuses, South San Antonio Independent School District trustees are acting on misguided emotion, not pragmatic governance. Trustees are sitting back and watching their district, which first opened its doors in 1922, implode.

At South San last year, there were more than 7,900 students, more than 90 percent of whom are economically disadvantaged, according toIn the 2017-2018 school year, the enrollment was more than 9,100. Three of the four schools recommended for closure were previously closed, but reopened by trustees in 2019, defying the recommendation of a former superintendent. This was a major, and costly, mistake.

Board President Ernesto Arrellano and Trustee Manuel Lopez voted yes on the four motions to close the schools at thetrustees Homer Flores Jr., Shirley Ibarra, Abel “Chillidogg” Martinez Jr., Cyndi Ramirez and Stacey Alderete voted no. Yzaguirre has been sounding the alarm, saying if the district doesn’t take action, it will soon need to tap into its reserve fund of about $30 million. It could be a year-and-a-half before the district is out of funds and would default on its obligations.
