Editorial | How Denver voters can weed through all these candidates
Denverites are rightly concerned about the increase in youth gang-related violence, property crimes and homelessness. Any community online forum these days is filled with depressing stories of drive-by shootings, stolen cars, and homeless encampments that are unsanitary and obtrusive.
How can Denver’s next mayor work collaboratively across a vast political divide to tamp down on violence? This city needs a robust police force working not only to solve homicides but also to preemptively cut at the heart of drug and gun trafficking that leads indirectly to horrific crimes. Candidates for mayor must have a plan to humanely care for a growing homeless population, especially those struggling with crushing addictions to drugs and alcohol. Crime and homelessness are terrible on their own, but both have contributed to the growing sense that downtown Denver is unsafe. For this city to thrive, it needs an attractive downtown full of employees, employers, and tourists.
Aside from all of that, the next mayor must have the skills from day one to manage a vast force of city and county employees. Denver is a major employer with agencies running our parks, maintaining our streets, caring for the least among us, and managing development and construction projects from large to small.
