Mister Charles’ menu offers a few subtle nods to the 106-year-old business that came before it on Knox Street.
. Mister Charles probably never sat at those spinning diner chairs, never ordered a grilled cheese and a milkshake. But, as an homage to the historic business, the restaurant has an ice cream sundae on its menu with sprinkles for $15. It isn’t a perfect fit for the chic restaurant where dinner might start with a foie gras croquette, $8, or corn-and-truffle beignets, $18, but, as Martin says, Mister Charles is loads of fun even though it’s fancy. The sundae is a sweet touch.
An even better nod to the soda fountain is Mister Charles’ one-bite canapé. The $9 open-faced egg salad sandwich, about an inch or so long, is a tiny reminder of the Southern lunch option once served at Highland Park Soda Fountain. Today, the egg salad sandwich is topped with caviar, a bougie twist on a classic. Et voilà:The canapés are “the things you’d expect to get with your grandmother at the Plaza Hotel in the afternoon,” Martin said in an interview withthis week.
The chefs play it straight with the 16-ounce A Bar N Ranch wagyu New York strip with au poivre sauce, $94. The scallops, $58, come with caviar sauce. It’s fun to see Wellington back on a menu. Mister Charles’ is made with lamb loin, not beef. It feeds two people for $91. As you can see, Mister Charles has means.Pastas are a shareable option at a lower price point.
“These concepts are so different from one another, we think they deserve their own menus,” Martin says.
