Thu, April 4th 2024 at 9:16 PMBased on the number of travelers coming and estimates on how much they'll spend Rick Siger with the state's economic development team says the economic impact is between $13 to $50 million dollars. Siger believes this is a chance to possibly get returning visitors in the future.
"Our hope is that people traveling to Pennsylvania from other places won't just take this one opportunity to visit us, but will come back again and again," says Siger. Business owners are hoping to cash in on the hundreds of thousands of people the Shapiro Administration believes will be traveling to Pennsylvania to set their eyes on the solar eclipse. Pennsylvania is one of only 13 states in the path of totality for the eclipse. Officials expect upwards of 200,000 people traveling to the Erie alone.
"I just like to see new people and more faces so they can tell more about us," says business owner, Sophia Nelms, of Sophia’s at Walden in Cumberland County."People trickle in over time. The hotels will see their guest arrive as early as Friday and will stay for the weekend. On Monday you'll see those visitors who aren't staying for the weekend stay until early Monday morning," explained Jillian Harry with PennDot.
