TUCSON, Ariz. — People across America will be watching next week’s total solar eclipse. But a special group of scientists will be watching from the skies, hoping to advance research in infrared astronomy.
Jenna Samra is a principal investigator and instrument scientist, affiliated with the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian.“It’s terrifying, but it’s also, there’s this feeling as the sun starts to eclipse, you just can’t believe you’re here,” she explained. It then bounces off a mirror into the instrument, which separates the light into spectra and records infrared data. The instrument can be adjusted and moved based on the position of the plane relative to the sun.
“The sun, it’s bright. It’s warm. It’s the giver of life, basically,” said Chad Madsen, an astrophysicist with the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian. “But at the same time, it’s a self-sustained, thermo-nuclear explosion in space that we have to live next to.”
