But I've never followed this time-honored tradition of my fellow Americans. Every time I've cooked Thanksgiving dinner, I've served it at dinnertime—around 6:30pm or 7pm. And it's not just because people are actually hungry and primed to eat a bigger meal in the evening. It also gives me enough time to finish up the food I'm making for the holiday, rather than just reheating recipes from the day before.
"But I love early Thanksgiving!" one of my colleagues protested. "That way you can wait a few hours and eat leftovers for dinner!" Sorry, still not getting it. Since when do people want to eat leftovers the same day they eat the original meal? Part of the appeal of leftovers is that absence makes the heart grow fonder . Eating more Thanksgiving dinner just a few hours after the feast isn't eating leftovers—it's just keeping the party rolling.
