East Oak Cliff apartment residents say management ignores lack of gas, hot water or AC

The Volara Apartments in east Oak Cliff have drawn the attention of Dallas police and city leaders who say they're one of the top violent-crime hot spots in the city. When Destiny Morris was looking for a place to live about three years ago, the Volara Apartments on Overton Road in east Oak Cliff made the most sense. The rent was relatively cheap, so Morris hoped she would save up some money by living there.

Morris, who now faces eviction from the complex, said she’s spent between $300 and $400 in recent months on hotel rooms so her 7-year-old daughter didn’t have to take a cold shower.Where are Dallas murders happening? Police say apartments, and officials plan to focus on themThe only light in Morris’ apartment came from a small floor lamp. She hasn’t had a smoke detector in the three years she’s lived there. Peeling paint and water stains cover her ceiling and walls.

“I don’t fault them because they just came,” she said, “but they can go home to hot water and cook. I bet they don’t have rats running around their house.”
