The small city has been so cash-strapped that it cannot pay out major damages in lawsuits. Because of that, some attorneys refuse to take cases against the city.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The city of East Cleveland must pay $12 million for a judgement and interest that a jury awarded to two people struck by a police cruiser involved in a chase, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.
The court unanimously granted an order to compel the payment, plus pre- and post-judgment interest, after a request to the court by Charles Hunt and the estate of Marilyn Conrad. Hunt and Conrad were seriously injured in 2008 when East Cleveland Police Officer Todd Carroscia collided with a vehicle Hunt was driving.
