A Lake County judge revoked an East Chicago man’s prior bond Wednesday after he was charged later with shooting at his estranged wife on the highway.
Andres Perez, 43, was charged Oct. 24 with attempted murder, stalking, battery and three counts of criminal recklessness.after the man slashed his tires, charges allege.The woman and relatives said in court documents their relationship was abusive. Perez is also facing a domestic battery case and no-contact order violation against the woman in Porter County, records show.“These are allegations,” said attorney Kenneth Elwood, who is representing Perez in the July shooting.
Elwood asked for the bond in the July case to be kept, arguing allegations Perez shot at his wife on the road were “completely unfounded”.Elwood said no weapon had been recovered from the highway shooting.Judge Samuel Cappas revoked Perez’s bond in the July case — meaning he will stay in prison. His bond in the October case remains at $250,000 or $25,000 cash.Perez’s no-contact order prohibits him from calling or seeing the woman, or having a gun, court records show.
His wife told state troopers on Oct. 23 she was out at a club in Highland with two friends when Perez called her. She told him she was there and he showed up at the club to confront her, records allege. The woman and her friends left, going to the White Castle off Cline Avenue, before heading on I-80/94 east. Perez allegedly tailed them in a GMC Yukon before opening fire on the passenger side, where the woman sat.
Police arrived where the women stopped at I-80/94, on the southbound Indiana 49 ramp, near Chesterton, charges state. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
