Pinones was the leader until the near end when Katy Seven Lakes senior and Auburn signee Matthew Rueff — the second-to-last thrower — marked 68-feet-1¾ to take the lead from Pinones. “ talked about relaxing and keeping my composure and get one out there going into finals,” Pinones said of his opening attempt Saturday. “It ended up rolling off my hand really nice, and it just felt good.”
Putting the competition into perspective, Rueff’s mark is the second-best in the country. Pinones is fourth-best. Wise took second in the girls 6A triple jump a mark of 42-0 on her final attempt that lifted her from fifth place.Wise, who qualified for state as a wild-card, struggled to find the right approach in her first four attempts. None of them went past 40 feet. After qualifying with a 41-1½ at regionals, Wise knew she had a big jump in her.“On the fifth jump, I was ‘OK, Taylen.
