Michael AdkisonThough official reports and statistics have not yet been released, early anecdotal data indicate the turnout for the total solar eclipse in Austin was significant, although possibly lower than had first been expected, likely as a result of poor weather forecasts.
"We've only heard from maybe two or three that they saw a few reservation cancellations, but it wasn't enough to significantly impact their occupancy or the reports that we're seeing," Wesley Lucas, director of communications with Visit Austin, said. "Definitely, we saw an increase in visitation year over year.
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport said it was estimating some 36,000 departures on Tuesday, with more anticipated on Wednesday. A significant number of travelers also rented cars, the airport said, at a rate of roughly twice as many as are rented during F1, one of the busiest travel periods for Austin.
