Pinball fans are intense about their sport.FRISCO — In a nondescript convention center conference room, Phil Grimaldi was wearing Sony headphones and a black ball cap with HOUSTON stitched in bright white letters across the front and bouncing on his toes in front of a pinball machine.
“I had a game plan, I knew what I wanted to accomplish,” Grimaldi said later. “That table was playing very tough. If your shot accuracy is off, that one will punish you.” The throng included wizened veterans who first came to the game in its '60s and '70s heyday; Gen Z-ers just discovering the silver ball; families turning their kids onto pinball; and those seeking to drop some serious coin for home or business machines.Members of Houston’s competitive pinball leagues turned out in force for the festival, both to play and, like Grimaldi, vie in the festival’s tournaments for better rankings and cash prizes.
Many of the upstarts had new titles they showcased at the festival. Chicago Gaming drew huge lines of attendees waiting to play its Pulp Fiction table, created at the behest of that film’s director, Quentin Tarantino, who wanted to be able to play it in his living room. Pinball Brothers showed off a machine themed around the band Queen, and every machine at its show-floor booth sported a yellow SOLD sticker.
Zachary Sharpe, by the way, is part of a family that’s the closest thing to royalty in modern pinball. His father, Roger Sharpe, is credited with convincing members of the New York City Council to make the game was a game of skill, not of chance, and convincing them to drop a three-decade ban in the mid-1970s.
