DuPage County's James Mendrick is now part of a list of more than 90 sheriffs across the state that oppose the new assault weapons ban law.
Congressman Sean Casten, along with other state lawmakers, called the comments irresponsible and reckless.Casten says he is focused on Mendrick because his county is in his district.
"We know there is a network of people who are already illegally trafficking guns in DuPage," said Casten. "If the sheriff of DuPage is basically saying I have more in common and more to support and more alignment with the people who are breaking the law than the people who don’t want to get shot, that comes out in a court of law, then yes, I think there has to be accountability. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
Sheriff Tom Dart of Cook County says he will uphold the law, and feels the sheriffs are responding to the law prematurely. "I think the more prudent thing would be to say, A: we enforce the laws that exist. We do have manpower issues, we all do, so where is that gonna fit in your pecking order. That would be unique to that sheriff.
In DuPage County, it is expected that the sheriff's decision could be discussed at the board meeting Tuesday at 10 a.m.that I have read and agree
