Crashes that have sent cars and trucks careening into East Cemetery have prompted Dundee Township officials to erect a fence around the 130-year-old graveyard.
Benigno Vargas, left, and Juan Garcia install a new wrought-iron fence around East Cemetery at Higgins Road and Dundee Avenue in East Dundee. Dundee Township officials say the new enclosure should stop vehicles from driving onto the cemetery grounds when there's a crash.
Dundee Township Supervisor Arin Thrower said officials started looking at ways to protect the grounds at Higgins Road and Dundee Avenue in East Dundee following a series of accidents over the last few years, the most recent occurring in June. One of most damaging involved a truck riding over several graves after it veered off the road in October 2020, she said.
The $300,000 fence is being funded with a grant Dundee Township received from the state’s Build Illinois program. Because the money’s not yet in hand, the township is using money from an East Dundee Tax Increment Financing District on a temporary basis, Thrower said. The wrought iron fence incorporates brick pillars similar to those used throughout downtown East Dundee, giving the cemetery a more modern look, Thrower said.
