: “I am here with you as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of color, and as your sister,” she said to cheers and applause. “I am here with you and I am hereAfter completing a number of engagements focused on women’s empowerment and gender equality, the Duchess of Sussex continued to work on these themes behind closed doors, inviting a group of South Africa’s female leaders for an informal breakfast meeting on Thursday, September 26.
During the course of the gathering, Meghan had the opportunity to hear inspiring stories from each woman, including that of anti-apartheid activist Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, who led 20,000 women to march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria in protest of apartheid laws in 1956. She is the last living leader of the Women’s March, which she led at just 18 years old.
At Thursday’s meeting, Meghan shared just how much the nine women’s stories meant to her. “We can learn a certain amount from the outside, by tracking it through the news, but it’s not the same as being able to truly understand what it’s like on the ground,” she said. “Much of my life I have been advocating for women and girls’ rights, so this has been an incredibly powerful moment to hear first-hand from all of you.
