DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian and DHSUD Secretary Jose Acuzar met on Thursday to discuss the provision of temporary shelters for the homeless or families and individuals in street situations.
Gatchalian and Acuzar met at the DHSUD Central Office to discuss the type of housing units that the DHSUD will provide while DSWD social workers process the return to the provinces of the concerned individuals and families.
“The shelter assistance is intended for individuals under the Oplan Pag-Abot program, specifically those who do not have a place to stay in their respective provinces after having been shunned by their families,” Gatchalian said. The secretaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development are slated to sign a memorandum of understanding to formalize a partnership between the two agencies, the DSWD said.
The DSWD's Oplan Pag-Abot aims to reach people living and staying on the streets and provide them with the necessary and appropriate interventions to address their immediate and long-term needs. As of August, some 38 families composed of 113 minors and 111 adults or a total of 224 individuals have been reached by the DSWD under the program.
