Officers found Melvin Montoya, 37, intoxicated inside the 149th Street–Grand Concourse station in Mott Haven around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.
Cops were rendering aid to Montoya when they noticed a long, heavy metal object going down his leg, police said. When the officers frisked Montoya, he reached for the crudely made weapon, cops said.
The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit responded and determined the gun was a gas-operated one-shot rifle, police sources said. Montoya claimed he made the gun on his own and that it is capable of firing rounds, according to the sources. He was charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon – one for possession of a disguised gun and another for carrying a gun as a convicted felon, cops said.
