The sudden collapse of Yellow left thousands of workers stranded. Here are some of their stories.

Drivers and forklift operators reported to work and found barricades, empty forklift docks and notes announcing the company had ceased operationsYellow, one of the oldest and biggest U.S. trucking businesses, shut down on Sunday, wrecked by a string of mergers around 20 years ago that left it saddled with debt and stalled by a standoff with the Teamsters union.

The failure imperils nearly 30,000 jobs, including around 22,000 Teamsters members. Hundreds of Yellow's nonunion employees were laid off last Friday after the company stopped taking in new shipments from customers. The Teamsters said it is working to find its Yellow members jobs in freight and other industries.

Tim Livesay, a Yellow forklift operator, said there was no freight on the docks for three days. "There was nothing to move. We were sitting there waiting for our demise."Many of Yellow’s employees that reported to work on Monday saw trucks and concrete parking blocks preventing entrance to the terminals, and notes announcing that the company had ceased operations.

When struggling Yellow sought financial concessions from its union employees earlier this year, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien, in front, refused and tweeted the image of a gravestone in a cemetery with “Yellow” on it.Yellow disputed this, saying that it did not seek concessions from the union. The 99-year-old Yellow was the country’s third-largest less-than-truckload carrier, combining shipments from multiple customers on a single trailer—a market that includes nonunion companies. As trucking volumes fell this year, Yellow struggled to pay its health and pension obligations. When the Teamsters threatened to strike in mid-July, Yellow customers bolted, leading the company to the verge of bankruptcy.
