He has been charged with multiple offenses following an investigation of the December accident.
Stephen M. Karwowski, 30, of Elmer, was driving a pickup truck northbound on Route 49/South Broadway in Pennsville on the evening of Dec. 4 when his vehicle struck the passenger side of a car driven by, 52, as she made a left from southbound 49 into the parking lot of a restaurant in the 400 block of South Broadway, according to police.
Townsend was pronounced dead at the scene. A total of five vehicles were involved in the wreck, police said at the time. The investigation revealed that Karwowski’s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit and he was charged last week with aggravated manslaughter, reckless vehicular homicide and assault by auto, Pennsville Police Chief Vince Green announced.
Karwowski was also issued motor vehicle summonses for driving under the influence, reckless driving, improper passing and failure to maintain lane. A warrant was issued for his arrest and Karwowski turned himself in on Thursday. He was placed in Salem County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.
