A man accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a driver on Interstate 8 in La Mesa last week pleaded not guilty Friday to murder and other charges.
Iqbal Ibrahim, 30, is accused in the death of Jeffrey Garde, 53, who was fatally injured in an Oct. 27 crash on eastbound I-8 near Grossmont Boulevard. In addition the murder charge, Ibrahim, an El Cajon resident, faces charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI resulting in great bodily injury, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. The complaint filed in El Cajon Superior Court notes that Ibrahim has a DUI conviction from May 2018.
If convicted of second-degree murder, he faces a possible sentence of 15 years to life in prison. He was ordered to remain held in county jail on a no-bail status, according to online jail records.Police and prosecutors say Ibrahim was behind the wheel of a Mercedes that slammed into the back of a 1979 Toyota pickup driven by Garde.
Both men were injured in the crash and hospitalized. Garde, of El Cajon, died later that day as a result of his injuries, said California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow.
