The Mazda MX-5 roadster hit a telephone pole and then went over the edge and down a steep slope.
A driver was killed Thursday when his car plunged 100 feet down a steep slope in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The crash was reported at 6:44 a.m. on Bonny Doon Road about 1½ miles east of Highway 1, the California Highway Patrol said. A 37-year-old Santa Cruz man westbound in a 2020 Mazda MX-5 roadster drove off the road, hit a telephone pole and then went over the edge into a ravine. It took emergency workers more than 30 minutes to reach the wreckage; the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
