Man was speeding from a hit-and-run in a Cadillac Escalade when he struck a tree and large berm at Sleepy Hollow and Boncosky roads in unincorporated Dundee Township.
A 58-year-old Elgin man died after he fled the scene of a crash on Saturday and drove into a tree, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s office news release.
Authorities said Martin Contreras was speeding from a hit-and-run in a Cadillac Escalade when he struck a tree and large berm at Sleepy Hollow and Boncosky roads in unincorporated Dundee Township. Contreras, who was the only person in the Cadillac, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the news release.The first crash that the driver was fleeing from was relatively minor.
The Cadillac sped away from the crash scene. A witness and the driver of the other vehicle called 911, but law enforcement didn’t arrive until after the Cadillac hit the tree a little over a mile away.The driver of the vehicle hit in the first crash reported some soreness and pain but was not transported to the hospital, Gorski added. Authorities said the crashes remain under investigation.
