With a new Gucci Beauty contract and a freewheeling approach to makeup, Thomas de Kluyver pushes the limits of lipstick.
After the last shot of the day at an East London photo studio, Thomas de Kluyver is talking about the extensive contents of his kit. “You have to be prepared for everything,” the largely self-taught makeup artist says with a boyish sense of mischief, describing the products he keeps on hand for his editorial and runway improvisations: prosthetic tears and colored contacts; temporary tattoos, which were writ large for.
“I had never seen anyone wear that much makeup before,” de Kluyver marvels, explaining that he has used cosmetics as a form of self- expression throughout his career—from Perth’s rave scene to Alessandro Michele’suniverse, where he recently arrived as global makeup artist.
