The Department of Tourism has announced that it will give P2 million to each of the oil spill-affected local government units as funding for their qualified tourism-related projects through the Tourism Infrastructure and Economic Zone Authority.

Earlier, Tourism Secretary Christina G. Frasco announced that tourist destinations in Oriental Mindoro and nearby provinces have been affected by the oil spill caused by the sinking of the motor tanker Princess Empress on February 28. Expressing grave concern, she noted that around 66 tourist sites and over 1,400 tourism workers have been impacted.

“And so, it’s very important for us to be able to balance the need to manage the crisis and the need to ensure that livelihood and employment continues and that is why andito po tayo para po mabigyan naman po ng support yung ating local government units …” “The certificate entitles the organization to tourism training interventions with starter kits for alternative livelihoods while they cannot engage in their present occupation due to the oil spill,” the tourism department stated.
