was the very first place on the planet that I knew I was going to be great, and that I knew I belonged. In 1991, I came to the Canadian championships there, and everyone was expecting Ben, and Bruny , and all these guys. I was practising sparingly, I was competing part-time. I was undefeated coming into the Canadian championships, but I had a terrible start in the 60 and ended up coming fourth.
I retired many years ago with a lot of gold medals: Pan American Games, Goodwill Games, Francophone Games, World Championships, Olympics. And then I got a few world records. I look at them — and my kids, my friends, my friend’s kids, or the younger generation — look at them, and understand that I actually put the work in.: I think competition is a helluva drug. Regardless of what happens, the adrenaline rush you’re going to get from competing at the highest level, that will never, ever fade.
When I retired, I recognized that my body was going. But I also had to transition to things that are … not as stimulating, but find many things that allow me to balance my life. Helping kids, philanthropy, business, being a dad. Every single part of your body has to be working in unison, and that will allow you to actually run fast. If I ever was stupid enough to jump on the track, to go and race somebody … there’s two things that will happen. One, there’s competition, you’re a competitive person, and two, there’s muscle memory. Some of those muscles you used in raw, top speed have not been used in many, many years.
