THE Department of Labor and Employment is in favor of imposing the four-day workweek scheme to help the public save money and energy amid the increasing prices of fuel, an official said in a television interview Thursday, March 17, 2022.

The four-day workweek scheme was proposed Wednesday, March 16, by National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua, who also supported the Finance department’s recommendations to retain the excise tax on fuel products and instead provide targeted subsidies to poor families to help alleviate the impact of the fuel crisis.

In a separate interview, acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar said President Rodrigo Duterte is set to reveal on March 21 the decision whether to approve the four-day workweek recommendation. He said the four-day workweek was recommended to alleviate the negative effects of the ongoing fuel price increases brought about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Andanar hinted Thursday, March 17, that Neda’s recommendation might be approved, stressing Duterte tends to follow the experts’ suggestions.
