'The actions of the United States in these two cases strike a resounding blow to the government of Iran,' the DOJ said.

This represents the United States' largest-ever seizure of weapon shipments from Iran.

The operation was conducted in the Arabian Sea while the Navy was conducting a routine patrol of the area, the DOJ said. The shipment of arms was set up and funded by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps , a branch of the Iranian Armed Forces that the U.S. has designated a terrorist group. The DOJ announced that the U.S. Navy had confiscated two caches of weapons from an Iranian terrorist group that was meant for Yemeni insurgents. Here, two U.S. ships are joined by a German vessel in the Arabian Sea during a replenishment at sea.

The oil was sold by the government for over $26 million, and the proceeds of that sale will be put towards a fund for victims of terrorism, the DOJ added.
