My guess is that the quick and easy roster move will be to activate lefty-swinging Matt Beaty, who's rehabbing from a minor hip flexor, for the Cubs series beginning tomorrow night at Chavez Ravine. Taylor will likely play short versus Chicago. And then we'll just see about a more aggressive move.
When Corey Seager sat out the 2017 National League Championship Series with a bad back, the Dodgers didn't miss a beat. Charlie Culberson and Chris Taylor played shortstop and hit .455/.417/.818 and .316/.458/.789, respectively, with Taylor winning NLCS MVP honors. Los Angeles also boasted sometimes-shortstop KikéHernandez on the squad at the time, and all he did was homer three times in helping to dispose of the defending champion Cubs in the clincher at Chicago.
Taylor got off to a miserable start to hit .171/.520 in March/April but bounced back strong in May . Now he's back to slumping, managing just a .154/.555 in the last two weeks and .147/.518 thus far in June. Hernandez has 10 home runs and 33 RBIs, which is helpful, but he hasn't taken advantage of his first real opportunity as an everyday player, contributing only a .215/.674 to the L.A. cause. Maybe one of them gets hot immediately and stays hot. Maybe neither of them does.
