Disney's just-announced $12.99 bundle pricing for Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ is just the latest daunting existential threat to Netflix. Here's why:
Hey Disney CEO Bob Iger, what gives?
Disney previously fired its first shot across Netflix’s bow when it announced that it would withhold crown jewels of its content kingdom from Netflix and all other SVODs. That means no Disney princesses, no Star Wars, no Pixar, no Marvel ."No soup for you!", Netflix. Its second shot was to buy full control of increasingly-competitive Hulu. Its third shot is pricing. Iger previously announced a rock bottom “shock and awe”-inducing price of $6.99 per month for Disney+ alone.
Certainly many of you believe that Disney’s upcoming SVOD shots will have little impact on Netflix. After all, Netflix counts more than 150 million subscribers worldwide and Disney isn’t even out of the gates yet. But, don’t forget it’s not just Disney. Amazon Prime Video already is a massive SVOD player, as is Hulu . And soon, Apple TV+ and HBO Max enter the ring. HBO Max will, of course, also exclusively feature its own vast treasure trove of content like “Friends” .
