We chat with Peggy Holmes, the director of AppleTVPlus & Skydance's Luck, about the process of creating the unique locations and colorful characters in her new animated film:
A universe in which good and bad luck are manufactured and randomly distributed among humans lies at the core of Apple TV+ and Skydance Animation's Luck. With director Peggy Holmes at the helm, the film explores themes of family and friendship throughout its story of Sam Greenfield , the unluckiest girl in the world who meets a black cat named Bob, who she follows to the Land of Luck.
Peggy Holmes: The first thing we did was, our production designer Fred Warter, the first week on the movie we sort of shared all the research. We had done lots of research on luck and how humans look at luck — good luck and bad luck, and then lucky icons and symbols around the world. We had done a lot research on that, so we shared all that research with Fred, and then he went away.
I’m interested in how all the different characters came to be. Obviously, there’s a connection between luck and leprechauns, but were there any reasons to include a cat, unicorn, or dragon? They're so invested in the story, so, honestly, it's just super fun to be in a session with them and have them record the scene as written, and then they get these ideas, and they pop in these new ideas, and they bring it to life in a way that you never even thought about, and you're just like,"Ah! That's golden! Thank you so much!" We're just so grateful that they're so willing to just open up and play and go for it.
