have conjured a dramatic image: Sen. Ted Cruz tucking himself away inside a closet on Jan. 6, 2021, as Donald Trump supporters swarmed U.S. Capitol hallways.
In a new book, Cruz describes how the riot prompted senators to abandon the chamber and scramble to a secure, undisclosed location. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and then-Vice President Mike Pence were also determined not to let the rioters stop the government from working — although to them that meant re-convening and certifying the duly elected Biden’s victory.
He notes then-President Trump’s legal team and its allies filed more than 60 lawsuits that were quickly shot down by courts. According to Cruz, he had warned Trump’s team well before the election that it needed a stronger legal team in place, but his concerns were waved away.
