The Philippine weightlifting team is heading to the 2023 Southeast Asian Games without its top athlete.
Hidilyn Diaz, the country's first and only Olympic gold medalist, will not compete in the SEA Games in Cambodia because she opted to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifying event in South Korea. The qualifiers are set from May 3 to 13 and will practically run simultaneously with the Cambodia Games which is slated from May 5 to 17.Despite her absence, Diaz believes that the Philippine weightlifting team will do just fine.
The 19-year-old lifter from Bohol is out to defend her women's 71-kilogram gold medal she won in the Hanoi SEA Games last year.'We're at the peak of our condition right now. I'm ready to compete in the SEA Games,' said Sarno, who is also a gold medalist in the 2020 Asian Championships.Shift in weight divisionDiaz, likewise, is ready to do battle in unfamiliar turf.
