Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks will start Tuesday night's All-Star Game for the National League.
The All-Star managers announced their starting pitchers Monday morning in Seattle hours before the Home Run Derby. The New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole was selected to start for the American League.
This will be just the third time in Diamondbacks history that two Arizona players will start an All-Star Game, The other games were Matt Williams and Jay Bell and Luis Gonzalez and Randy Johnson . Gallen said he learned of the starting assignment last Wednesday and had been telling “white lies” since then, including to his family. His most recent start was a win Friday over the Pirates in which he limited Pittsburgh to 4 hits over 7 innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
Said NL manager Rob Thomson of the Phillies: “Zac’s numbers just came off the page for us. The numbers are incredible. He’s had a great year.”
