The Boston Red Sox were in a similar predicament: a rich, big-market team with seemingly no real direction except cutting costs and staying below the luxury tax line. They’d already traded Mookie Betts for peanuts a few years back and didn’t match Xander Bogaerts’ enormous deal with the Padres. Their superstar third baseman, Rafael Devers, was a year away from free agency, and the collective wisdom was the Sox would trade him this summer rather than pay him.
But then a funny thing happened this week: The Sox acted the way a team of their stature should and agreed to an 11-year,. Boston suddenly had its franchise centerpiece locked up. He filled a number of needs: someone the Sox could build a lineup around, a player who could help bridge the gap between the team’s present and future, and a face the Sox could sell to their fanbase.
The similarities to the Giants’ situation with Correa are obvious. Correa could have filled all of those same needs, the only difference being he didn’t come up in the Giants system — but the Giants haven’t produced a position player in over a decade who’d be worth that kind of money anyway. Maybe the Giantsabout his medical reports, but the way it was handled seemingly destroyed any chance of coming to an amended agreement.
The Red Sox were an aimless team before the Devers extension. Now, at least, they have a direction and a lynchpin to build a roster around. Can the Giants say the same?. He would have sold tickets, he would have been productive, and he would have bought the Giants’ top prospects more time to develop. Instead, the Giants find themselves in the same predicament as the Red Sox did: aimless, directionless, caught in an ostensibly endless malaise.right about Correa and his health.
