Denton’s quirky music and art fest will be held closer to Halloween this year. The author introduces readers to Joey Liechty, who makes it all happen.

The festival that began as fake rock festival poster will be held closer to Halloween, a more fitting time writes Rob Curran.Like Austin, Denton has made an industry of its quirkiness; as befitting the hip state capital’s awkward little brother, it’s a smaller, more grassroots and, well, quirkier industry than Keep Austin Weird Inc.
This year, singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe, one of the biggest musical acts to come out of Denton in recent years, is headlining, with backup from the ghoulish metal band Shaolin Death Squad.Liechty suspects Tigerhead guy will reappear, with his keyboard and one of his now Hydra-scale selection of fake heads. He randomly showed up to the second edition and ended up playing a set.
Liechty hasn’t officially added any cats or witches to the bill this year because he doesn’t want to repeat anything on the festival poster, which is still a key feature of the whole experience. There will be dogs, however. Also on this year’s bill is the marvelously misconceived July Fourth drone show that the city of Denton scheduled on the only year it ever rained on July Fourth anywhere in Texas . Liechty toyed with the idea of re-creating the event on the scale the city had envisioned, but the makers of “Apocalypse Now” can rest easy.
