Democratic leaders will convene on Tuesday to nominate a replacement for the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.There are 17 candidates vying for the nomination. The person selected on Tuesday will face the Republican challenger on the November ballot -- different from the person who will finish out Jackson Lee's current term.

Candidates for the 18th Congressional District seat include former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and former and current city council members Amanda Edwards and Letitia Plummer.Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who is among 17 hopefuls for the late Sheila Jackson Lee's congressional seat, got the backing of her children.

Whoever is selected will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot and, if they win, will serve the full, two-year term to represent District 18. At the same time, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called for a separate special election to happen on Election Day to determine who will carry out the current term, which ends in January. That means voters will vote twice on the same ballot for the same position.Among the candidates to finish out the term is Jackson Lee's daughter, Erica Lee Carter. She announced on Monday that she intended to run in the special election to "finish for my mom.
