Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who is 35, was bested by 74-year-old Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va. for the role earlier this month. Rep. Connolly's win followed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., attempting to use her strong influence within the Democratic Party to sway lawmakers away from Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Crockett, who serves on the House Oversight Committee, expressed frustration with the outcome despite acknowledging both Rep. Connolly and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez are qualified for the role. 'While I think that both are absolutely qualified, I do think that within the Democratic Caucus, we are really stuck in our old ways of doing things, which is: You get there by seniority,' the congresswoman said. 'And so, if you've been there longer, then you get the post, and I don't think that we fully sit there and say, 'who may be best equipped for this moment?' Rep. Crockett asserted the House Oversight Committee will be 'great' with Rep. Connolly in the leadership role. However, when asked whether Rep. Ocasio-Cortez was treated 'fairly' during the process, the Texas congresswoman responded, 'it depends on how you define fairly.' I think that America is looking at us and saying 'wait a minute, we lost the election and we know that the Senate lost seats .
