Davis Mills, whose struggles persisted on both ends of his brief 2022 benching, remains the only Texans quarterback under contract. The franchise could spend its No. 2 overall pick by drafting Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud. Perhaps the Texans will. But Ryans knows a quarterback needs a supporting cast. The 49ers lost Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo to season-ending injuries, and third-string quarterback Brock Purdy wielded San Francisco’s wealth of offensive weapons to win seven straight games until their loss to the Eagles in the NFC championship game.
“I know everybody gets excited about the quarterback. The quarterback is one piece to a team,” Ryans said. “I’ve seen in San Francisco what happens when you don’t have that one guy. Is the season over? Are you just booking it? No. How do you build around that quarterback? Yes, we want a great quarterback. But no, we need a great offensive line to protect the quarterback. We need great running backs. Great tight ends. We need a great defense. Special teams. We all play together.
Still, the 49ers invested heavily into the quarterback position. General manager John Lynch packaged San Francisco’s 2021 No. 12 overall pick with two more first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 to trade up to select Lance No. 3 overall. Lynch also traded a 2018 second-round pick to the Patriots for Garoppolo and subsequently signed him to a five-year, $137.5 million contract.
