Deepwater Horizon accurately depicts the true story of a massive oil rig disaster that occurred on April 20, 2010, off the coast of Louisiana. Directed by Peter Berg, the movie chronicles the lead-up to and subsequent explosion of the titular offshore drilling rig, which was operated by the Transocean company at the behest of BP. The workers are shown to be pushed to their limit by BP executives Donald Vidrine and Robert Kaluza , putting everyone in danger.
That day, the drillers improperly recirculated a waste mixture back into the well to use as a spacer between the water and the ocean floor. That’s not a problem on its own, but the mixture ended up clogging lines in the drill and skewed the results of two safety tests. That incorrect test told the drillers the well was properly sealed. It wasn’t. Just as a bicycle must be maintained, so too must an oil drill. Someone at BP or Transocean got lazy.
The Real People On Deepwater Horizon Deepwater Horizon is truthful in its depiction of the real-life people on the oil rig, many of whom did tragically perish in the explosion. Their characterizations are often accurate, as well. In the movie, Mike is on a call with his wife right before the explosion occurs, and this really happened, albeit in a less dramatic way, according to Time. The other characters are all based on actual people in the true story.
What Happened To BP After The Disaster Deepwater Horizon ends with a series of shots showing the fallout of the natural disaster. The testimonies of the real-life figures, including Mike Williams, are shown, and it’s revealed that Donald Vidrine and Robert Kaluza were the only two people prosecuted — on charges that were later dismissed. A postscript at the very end of the movie reads, "The blowout lasted for 87 days, spilling an estimated 210 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
