A two alarm fire broke out at 63 Buxome Street early Saturday morning, causing extensive damage to legacy business Babylon Burning.owners Mike and Judy Lynch were suddenly awakened by a phone call they hoped would never come.
He grabbed the keys to his van and dashed out of their Sunset District home to make the drive to their warehouse and gallery in SoMa, shaving seven minutes off his usual 15 minute commute time. As he neared the 6th Street off-ramp, he could already see plumes of smoke wafting into the night sky. When he finally arrived at his business, the street was filled with police cars and fire trucks.
Over 70 firefighters were dispatched to the scene at around 1:09 a.m. on Saturday morning as the blaze quickly grew to a two-alarm fire that caused the roof to collapse and took more than three hours to extinguish, Jonathan Baxter, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department, told SFGATE. No one was injured, though the building sustained “major damage” and the cause of the fire, which originated on the top floor of the two-story building, is still under investigation, Baxter said.
