A Mesa church three days before Christmas received 32 migrants, mothers, fathers and 16 children, from six countries.
In the days leading up to this Christmas Day, a fierce debate over whether or not a Trump-era border policy should be allowed to expire raged across the nation, from the homes of ordinary Americans to the halls of Congress and even the Supreme Court, which ultimately will decide the fate of Title 42.
Ramirez was waiting for immigration authorities to drop off the latest group of asylum seekers, who just days earlier had crossed the southern border and turned themselves over to the Border Patrol. They arrived in a white Department of Homeland Security bus that lumbered into the parking lot at 8:32 a.m. Thursday, three days before Christmas.
In the face of each migrant, Ramirez was reminded of the Christmas story, when Mary and Joseph flee to Egypt to save baby Jesus from being killed, the pastor would later say. William Cofre, 24, and his wife, Blanca Ninasunta, 21, struck out for the United States from Ecuador on Nov. 27. They traveled with their tiny daughter, Jennifer, who is 2 years and 6 months old.
Sitting inside the sanctuary, where Jennifer scampered around in bare feet, Ninasunta said she and her husband were farmers in Ecuador. They grew onions, potatoes and table grapes on one hectare of land, about 2.5 acres, but were barely surviving. They decided to leave, Ninasunta said, to escape the crushing poverty and the constant threat of violence from thieves in urban areas.
