Day after Kevin Sumlin leaves, USFL's Houston Gamblers name Curtis Johnson as head coach

The 61-year-old Johnson has coached in college and the NFL for 35 years, including four seasons as Tulane's head coach where he took the Green Wave to its first bowl game in 11 seasons, but ultimately was dismissed in 2015 after going 15-34 in his time there. Johnson won a national championship as a receivers coach at Miami from 1996 to 2005 and won a Super Bowl as the Saints receivers coach from 2006 to 2011.
Most recently, he was in his second stint as an assistant in New Orleans before Sean Payton left the Saints after the 2021 season. "Coach Johnson has been on the USFL head coach radar, so when Coach Sumlin recently informed us that he would be stepping down, I immediately called Curtis," the USFL's executive vice president of football operations, and former Dallas Cowboys fullback, Daryl Johnston said."We’re thrilled that he enthusiastically embraced the challenge to be the Gamblers head coach.
The Gamblers and the new USFL enter its second season with most teams still never having played in their home cities. The league played its games last season in Birmingham, Ala., where the Gamblers finished 3-7 under Sumlin. This season, they'll play out of the USFL's Memphis, Tenn., hub along with that city's new Showboats franchise, the former Tampa Bay Bandits. Birmingham, Detroit and Canton, Ohio, also will serve as USFL hubs this season.
